Stigma related to mental illness

Many people around the world face mental illness. Some mental illnesses are minor, while others are severe and life-threatening. There are chances where mental illness cases may arise due to unwanted situations like pandemic outbreaks, floods, and many more. Minor mental disorders can be cured easily, while the significant mental illness takes years to heal. People who have mental illness are already facing lots of issues in life. Additionally, stigma related to mental illness increases the pressure. 

Stigma related to mental health is when people feel shame to live with a person suffering from mental illness. It is usually societal disapproval of mental illness. 

Stigma related to mental health can evolve from stereotypes where a group of people defines or judge others based on few defining attributes that are often negative, inaccurate, and sometimes offensive. Despite supporting those who have a mental illness, society ignores them and makes unnecessary comments that often make them feel ashamed.

Effects of Stigma related to Mental illness:

People facing mental illness also face the stigma related to it, hence increase pressure. Stigma can be in the form of hurtful, offensive, and disrespectful language that affects people’s minds who have a mental illness. The effects of stigma related to the mental disease include:

  • Social isolation, where the person who has mental illness keeps himself apart from society because of fear of social disapproval.
  •  Lower self-esteem is a situation where a person who has a mental illness feels worthless and hopeless. 
  • Worsening the condition of mental illness
  • Discrimination is when the person gets discriminated against at the workplace, college, or wherever he visits. 
  • Unemployment
  • Feeling of shame
  • Lack of understanding is when people who have mental illness feel that no one can understand them, and hence they keep their problem with themselves instead of sharing.

What can we do?

The best we can do is we can support those who are suffering from mental illness. We should find numerous ways to get them out of their mental illness. We as a society can take care of them and always help them to stay happy. Surprises are the best way to help them boost up their mood. Allowing them to share their problem with us will provide us an opportunity to solve their problem. Giving treatment references can help them get the proper treatment to cope with the mental illness.
